A FAMILLE ROSE WIDE-MOUTHED BOWL WITH BOYS AT PLAY, THE BASE BEARING A SIX-CHARACTER DAOGUANG MARK 尺寸:D:17cm;H:10cm 敞口斜腹碗,器形舒展。 A wide-mouthed tapered bowl with flared sides. The exterior is painted in famille rose all-round with a procession of boys at play: children in colourful robes holding drums, gongs, suona horns, rattle-drums and banners, dancing joyfully. The figures are lively and the palette bright. The base bears an underglaze-blue six-character seal-script mark of the Daoguang period. The theme of boys at play dates back to Tang painting and was especially popular in the Song academy, where Su Hanchen set the classical example. On Ming and Qing porcelain it became ubiquitous: children carrying banners, beating drums, dancing lions or setting off firecrackers, all festive scenes. Painted implicitly for wishes of many sons and continuing descendants, such wares were used as wedding or birth gifts. This bowl depicts children with gongs, drums and suona horns, evoking the New Year or Lantern Festival street processions central to traditional festival life.
