A PAIR OF FAMILLE ROSE COVERED BOWLS WITH THE HUNDRED BOYS, BEARING A SIX-CHARACTER QIANLONG MARK A pair of covered bowls with domed lids and knops. Both cover and bowl are painted all-round with a Hundred Boys scene: crowds of children in colourful robes carrying banners inscribed Peace under Heaven, beating drums, dancing with lions and parading with lanterns. The knops and rims are edged with underglaze-blue key-fret. The base bears a red six-character seal-script mark of the Qianlong period. The Hundred Boys motif derives from the Classic of Poetry, which praises King Wen's queen as the mother of many virtuous sons. From the Song onward it became an auspicious subject on porcelain, brocade and New Year prints, showing children dancing lions, beating drums, carrying lanterns and holding banners inscribed Peace under Heaven. It wishes for many sons and an age of prosperity. The covered bowl itself is a tea vessel that became popular after the Qianlong reign, used for serving guests on festive occasions.
