A QING BLUE AND WHITE BOWL PAINTED WITH TAOTIE MASKS, THE BASE BEARING A SIX-CHARACTER KANGXI MARK 尺寸:D:14cm;H:7cm 瓷質青花。 A porcelain blue-and-white bowl with an everted rim, deep sides and foot ring, on a bright white glaze. The exterior is painted with a frieze of stylised taotie masks in symmetric angular patterns, the blue tone deep and even. The foot is neatly finished. The base bears an underglaze-blue six-character regular-script mark of the Kangxi period. The shape is dignified. The symmetric angular mask on the exterior is a taotie motif. Taotie is described in Lü's Spring and Autumn Annals as a fearsome beast with a head but no body; the name was later given to the symmetrical mask designs on Shang and Zhou bronzes. The mask is organised around a central ridge, with eyes, brows, horns and claws spread in balanced symmetry, the angular lines conveying solemnity and awe; key-fret and thunder patterns fill the ground below.
