A MING BLUE-AND-WHITE AND UNDERGLAZE-RED DRAGON DISH ON A WAVE GROUND, BEARING A CHENGHUA MARK A blue-and-white and underglaze-red dish with everted rim. The centre is painted with a dragon amid rolling waves: the dragon in underglaze blue, the waves in underglaze red. The cavetto carries blue dragons among clouds. The base bears a six-character Chenghua mark in a double circle. The blue is soft and the red subdued. Underglaze red uses copper as a colorant fired at high temperature; copper turns red only in a narrow reducing range, and a ten-degree shift yields black, green or pale pink, making firing extremely difficult. It began at Jingdezhen in the Yuan and reached its peak under Yongle and Xuande. Chenghua pieces often combine blue and red, a costly and prized combination. The dragon amid waves denotes rule over the four seas and harmonious weather.
