A LARGE WUCAI DISH PAINTED WITH LADIES AND CHILDREN, INSCRIBED TANHUA LANG, THE BASE BEARING A YUTANG JIAQI MARK A large shallow dish. The interior is painted in wucai with a garden scene of ladies in green and red robes surrounded by playing children; rocks are rendered in washed underglaze blue and a red railing frames the setting. One side bears the underglaze-blue inscription Tanhua lang, the third-placed scholar. The rim is brown-edged. The base bears a four-character double-circle hall mark yutang jiaqi. The inscription Tanhua lang, or flower-searching scholar, originally referred to the third-place graduate in the imperial palace examination. In Tang times, after the list of successful candidates was proclaimed, two young and handsome graduates were chosen as flower-searching envoys to ride through the Qujiang gardens gathering blossoms; by the Southern Song the term was fixed for the third-ranked jinshi. Painted on porcelain with a child and ladies nearby, the motif wishes the heir of the house early success in the examinations. Together with zhuangyuan first and bangyan second, it forms the three dingjia.
