The centre is dominated by a large coral-red and gilt circular shou longevity medallion, surrounded by five bats in varied colours interspersed with peach branches and the Eight Daoist Emblems, symbolising five blessings holding longevity. The rim is gilded. The exterior is white with famille rose scrolling flowers. The base bears a coral-red six-character mark of the Guangxu period. The coral-red gilt shou medallion surrounded by five bats is the Five Bats Holding Longevity motif. The five blessings come from the Book of Documents: long life, wealth, health, love of virtue and a natural death. Since the Chinese word for bat (fu) is a homophone for blessing (fu), five bats encircling the shou character wish all five blessings upon the bearer. Peach branches and the eight Daoist emblems reinforce wishes for longevity and immortality. Such yellow-ground famille rose dishes were commonly made for birthday celebrations in the late Qing period.
