A SET OF EIGHTEEN WUCAI CUPS EACH PAINTED WITH A LUOHAN, EACH BASE BEARING A SIX-CHARACTER YONGZHENG MARK 尺寸:L:7cm;H:7.5cm 瓷質五彩。 A set of eighteen porcelain wucai bell-shaped cups on small foot rings, each on a white glazed body. One side of each cup is painted with a luohan, some bare-chested with a fan, some crossing water on a banana leaf, some leaning on pines, the eighteen arhats all distinct in poses, rendered in soft pink, green and blue. The reverse carries a seven-character verse in ink, followed by a small red seal. Each base bears an underglaze-blue six-character double-circle mark of the Yongzheng period. Elegant painting and calligraphy make a complete Qing tea-cup set. The eighteen luohan are Buddhist saintly protectors that evolved from the earlier sixteen arhats. Tang painting depicted sixteen; by the Five Dynasties and early Song two more, Pindola and Dharmatala, were added to make eighteen. Each has his own iconography: riding elephant or deer, open-chested, long-eyebrowed, pagoda-bearing, dragon-subduing or tiger-subduing. On Qing porcelain they were often painted as a set of eighteen, one per cup, each with a verse on the reverse, displayed in a chapel or study both as tea ware and as an auspicious protection.
