A QING ROUGE-RED GROUND FAMILLE-ROSE GARLIC-HEAD VASE WITH GILT DRAGON HANDLES AND HUNDRED BOYS 尺寸:L:22cm;H:46cm 粉彩蒜頭瓶,碩腹長頸。 A famille-rose garlic-head vase on a rich rouge-red, coral, ground reserved with gilt brocade panels. The neck is fitted with two applied dragon handles picked out in gilt. Two large roundels on the body contain Hundred Boys at spring festival: scores of boys carry lanterns, fly kites and play among pavilions, trees and rocks. Rims and foot are gilt. The palette is rich, set off by gilt. The Hundred Boys motif descends from the Book of Songs blessing Lady Tai Si with a hundred sons; boys-at-play appear on Han tomb reliefs and became a standard porcelain subject from the Song. Qing fencai hundred-boy scenes were used for festivals and imperial birthdays, with crowds of boys flying kites, carrying lanterns and playing in gardens, organised by pavilions and rocks. The rouge-red ground with gilt brocade roundels is a typical Qianlong court palette.
