A flambé-glazed double-gourd vase with small mouth and a beaded waisted joint. The glaze ranges from sky-blue to moon-white streaked with rose-purple and crimson, flowing naturally and glassy on the surface. The foot ring is left exposed in iron-black. Flambé, or yaobian, is produced when copper-red glaze flows unpredictably in a reducing kiln atmosphere near 1300 degrees; copper develops blue, purple, red and moon-white tones according to position, fuel and thickness, hence the name kiln transformation. Song Jun ware was famed for it; under Yongzheng and Qianlong the supervisor Tang Ying revived Jun glazes, reproducing rose-purple, begonia-red and sky-blue colours on gourd, gall-bladder and other vases for the court.
