A TURQUOISE-GROUND FAMILLE ROSE TIANQIUPING WITH SCROLLING LOTUS AND THE EIGHT BUDDHIST EMBLEMS A massive tianqiuping globular bottle vase with a small mouth and long neck rising to a bulbous body. The whole is covered in a turquoise-green ground, densely painted in famille rose with scrolling lotus interspersed with the Eight Buddhist Emblems, dharma wheel, conch, endless knot and others. A ruyi-cloud border encircles the mouth, and a yellow banana-leaf band finishes the foot. The rim is brown-edged. The Eight Buddhist Emblems, or Ashtamangala, are eight auspicious ritual objects adopted from Tibetan Buddhism: the dharma wheel, conch, umbrella, canopy, golden fish, auspicious vase, endless knot and lotus. They are traditionally said to have been offered to the newborn Buddha, each carrying its own symbolism. Introduced to China in the Yuan period through Tibetan Buddhism, they were widely painted on Ming and Qing porcelain, textiles and ritual wares, often combined with scrolling lotus to evoke the eternal presence of the dharma.
