A FAMILLE ROSE BEAKER VASE PAINTED WITH FIGURES, ANTIQUITIES AND LADIES A three-section beaker vase with a flared mouth, bulbous central section and splayed foot. The upper section is painted with scholars, boys, deer and cranes; the bulbous middle section displays antiquities, vases, censers and scrolls on stands; the lower section depicts a lady with children among banana plants and rocks. The composition is layered and richly varied. The white glaze is luminous. The gu-form beaker vase takes its silhouette from the bronze gu of the Shang and Zhou, originally a ritual wine vessel. Later porcelain wares followed this ancient bronze form, but by then the vessel was no longer used for drinking; instead it served as a flower vase, hence the name flower gu. Displayed on a hall table or studio shelf alongside censers and boxes, it formed a refined scholarly arrangement. The classic three-part division was especially popular under the Kangxi emperor, favoured for decorative themes such as scholars, antiquities and ladies.
