A FAMILLE ROSE ZUN WITH A HUNDRED DEER AMONG PINE MOUNTAINS, BEARING A SIX-CHARACTER QIANLONG SEAL MARK A massive pear-shaped zun vase with coral-red gilt ruyi handles on either side. The whole body is painted in famille rose with a Hundred Deer scene: deer in brown, white and red stand, lie and run among pine trees, blue-green rocks and streams. Pine needles are meticulously dotted in green, and rocks are rendered in underglaze-blue shading. It is an imposing Qing-period Hundred Deer vase. The Hundred Deer motif was a popular Qing porcelain subject, especially under the Qianlong emperor. The Chinese word for deer (lu) is a homophone for salary or emolument (lu), so a hundred deer reads as a hundred emoluments, an allusion to the Book of Odes meaning manifold blessings. Deer are also immortal animals associated with longevity, ridden by Daoist adepts and kept in the parks of the Queen Mother of the West. A herd of deer among pines and streams thus combines wishes for high office and long life. The vase type is called a deer-head zun after its two handles.
