A YELLOW-GROUND FAMILLE ROSE DRUM STOOL WITH FLOWERING BRANCHES AND COIN-SHAPED OPENWORK A barrel-shaped drum stool with gilt stud bosses around the upper and lower edges. The main body is yellow ground, painted in famille rose with peony, magnolia and chrysanthemum branches among green leaves. The top and bottom borders are ruby-ground scrolling flowers with a pair of confronting carp. Two sides have circular coin-shaped openwork medallions with five holes. The form is full and rounded. The barrel-shaped form with stud bosses is a xiudun, or embroidered stool, a traditional Chinese seat. Women would drape an embroidered silk cushion over the top, hence the name. Porcelain drum stools appeared from the Song onward and were widely used in Ming-Qing courtyards, boudoirs and studies. The openwork medallions on the sides are both decorative and practical, allowing the stool to be lifted and air to circulate. Painted with peony, magnolia and chrysanthemum, together with paired carp, it carries wishes for wealth and abundance.
