A WUCAI SLEEVE VASE PAINTED WITH MANDARIN DUCKS AMONG LOTUS PONDS 尺寸:D:15cm;H:44cm 瓷質五彩。 A porcelain wucai sleeve vase, with a straight mouth, long neck and cylindrical body on a shallow foot. The neck carries a small floral spray. The main body is painted with a lotus pond scene: red and white lotuses in bloom, broad blue leaves and reeds, while two ducks fly low over the water, their wings rendered in blue, green and brown. Cloud scrolls and a flaming sun float above, with blue rocks at the base. Combining underglaze blue with overglaze polychrome, the palette is fresh and the brushwork lively. The scene of red and white lotuses in bloom and two ducks skimming the water belongs to the lotus pond and mandarin ducks theme. Mandarin ducks were believed to mate for life; the Book of Odes already uses them as an image of wedded harmony, and later they became emblems of conjugal love and a lasting marriage. The word for lotus (lian) also sounds like continue, so ducks among lotuses additionally wish for the continuous birth of sons. Such pond scenes, derived from Song academy painting, became a favourite on porcelain for their freshness.
