A WUCAI HELMETED JAR PAINTED WITH A WARRIOR NARRATIVE 尺寸:L:18cm;H:31cm 瓷質五彩。 A porcelain wucai helmeted jar, with a rounded shoulder and tapering body, fitted with a hardwood lid and bud finial. The main body is painted in a narrative warrior scene: armored figures with halberds and banners, a commander in a red robe standing beneath pines, attendants around him, set among rocks and trees. Armor is rendered in blocks of blue, green and red with firm outlines. Floral sprays adorn the neck and brocade borders frame the shoulder and foot. The composition is dense and the palette rich. The helmeted jar takes its name from the domed cover with bud finial that resembles a general's helmet. Its broad body and narrow mouth originally served for storage, of tea or medicines, and in Qing palaces and elite households matched pairs were placed on hall tables, both as storage and display. The painted warrior scenes are drawn from popular novels such as the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Water Margin; such horse-and-figure subjects were especially common on Kangxi commercial wares.
