A PAIR OF QING QIANLONG YELLOW-GROUND FAMILLE-ROSE PALACE LANTERNS WITH BOY MEDALLIONS A pair of porcelain palace lanterns, the ovoid body raised on a tall spreading foot. A yellow ground painted with fencai scrolling flowers is interspersed with gilt openwork lattice roundels enclosing painted scenes of boys at play in gardens, with bridges, pavilions, trees and rocks. The stem and foot are likewise painted with blooms and key-fret, rims gilt. The pierced lattice admits light; the palette is rich. Palace lanterns were hung or stood on tall stands in imperial halls and mansions, their frames of wood, bronze or porcelain fitted with translucent silk or openwork panels; candles burned inside, the light shining through the pierced patterns. In the Qing court they were set in rows for New Year and imperial birthdays. This porcelain ovoid lantern with gilt openwork lattice was designed so the candlelight would filter through the roundels and play on the painted boys scenes.
