A CELADON-GROUND FAMILLE ROSE EWER WITH THE THREE FRIENDS OF WINTER AND INSCRIBED POETRY, THE BASE BEARING A SIX-CHARACTER QIANLONG SEAL MARK A covered ewer with a curved spout and looped handle. The body is on a celadon-green glaze ground; one side is painted with the Three Friends of Winter, pine, bamboo and plum, while the reverse is filled with inscribed poetry in running script. The spout, handle and knop are decorated with famille rose scrolling flowers and the rim is gilt. The base bears an underglaze-blue six-character seal-script mark of the Qianlong period. Pine, bamboo and plum are known as the Three Friends of Winter, a motif dating to Northern Song literary circles and later Yuan painting. The pine stays green through winter, the bamboo is hollow yet jointed, and the plum blooms before spring snow melts; together they symbolise the gentleman who keeps his integrity in adversity. The theme has appeared in painting, porcelain and silk since the Song and Yuan. Qing imperial wares combined poetry, painting and seal on one vessel, with the Three Friends on one side and an inscribed poem on the other.
