A PAIR OF DOUCAI CANDLESTICKS WITH SCROLLING LOTUS AND THE EIGHT BUDDHIST EMBLEMS, BEARING A SIX-CHARACTER QIANLONG MARK A pair of tall candlesticks with bell-shaped bases, bulbous knops, drip-trays and cylindrical sockets. The whole is painted in doucai with scrolling lotus and the Eight Buddhist Emblems, the palette fresh and elegant. A rectangular panel on the drip-tray bears the underglaze-blue six-character seal-script mark of the Qianlong period. Banana-leaf and triangular key-fret borders finish the neck and foot. Candlesticks were used for lighting in halls, studies and temples, the socket holding the candle while the drip-tray caught wax and the weighted base kept the stand steady. Porcelain candlesticks date back to the Tang and Song, and Ming-Qing Jingdezhen kilns made them in matched pairs. Together with a central censer and two beaker vases they form the five offerings placed on Buddhist or ancestral altars, where incense and candles are burned before the deity or ancestors. The Eight Buddhist Emblems painted on this pair make clear their liturgical use.
