A MING WUCAI LOBED-RIM BRUSH WASHER PAINTED WITH DRAGONS AND LOTUS SCROLLS, THE BASE BEARING A SIX-CHARACTER WANLI MARK A lobed-rim brush washer with an everted flat rim. The interior is painted in wucai with two dragons pursuing a flaming pearl among clouds, the dragons rendered in red, green and blue. The exterior is decorated with scrolling lotus flowers. The base bears a six-character underglaze-blue double-circle mark of the Wanli period, and the foot ring is left unglazed. The palette is bright and archaic. The xi, or brush washer, is a scholar's desk utensil filled with water for rinsing ink brushes. From the Tang and Song onward it was made in many forms, round, square, mallow and lobed, chiefly in porcelain. In Ming studios washers, waterpots and water droppers were displayed together; a large lobed example like this could hold broad brushes and also serve as a brush tray or small planter. The interior dragon-and-pearl motif and exterior scrolling lotus were made for a literati desk, the dragon also alluding to imperial patronage of letters.
