A CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL WALL PANEL DEPICTING THREE RAMS, WITH IMPERIAL POEM, QING DYNASTY This zitan-framed panel has a copper-body cloisonné enamel ground. The upper blue field carries gilt regular-script imperial poetry with seals; the lower is painted in white, black and yellow enamel with three rams standing on a grassy slope among flowers and rocks. The blue ground has a crackled brocade, the colours bright. It is a Qing court wall panel. Three rams bring in spring (sanyang kaitai) derives from the Hexagram Tai in the Book of Changes: the first lunar month is Tai, with three yang lines rising below, symbolizing winter's end, harmony and good fortune. Yang (sun/positive) is a homophone of yang (ram), so three rams picture the phrase. The court displayed three-ram paintings and vases at New Year and birthdays; Qianlong's poems on the theme were rendered in porcelain, enamel and lacquer.
