Guanyin stands wearing a jewelled crown and necklaces of pearled ornaments, her scarf and sash incised with fine patterns. The left hand is raised in mudra at the chest and the right falls in varada mudra. Behind her rises a pierced, flame-shaped mandorla edged with pearled beads. The jade is smooth and lustrous, and the carving of the flowing robes is assured. Guanyin, the Chinese transcription of Avalokiteshvara, is the bodhisattva of compassion who hears the cries of the world. The name was shortened from Guanshiyin in the early Tang to avoid the personal name of Emperor Taizong. Jade Guanyin figures usually follow the White-Robed or Fish-Basket Guanyin type, wearing a crown that often contains a small seated image of Amitabha, the bodhisattva's identifying emblem. The varada mudra of the lowered hand grants boons, while the hand at the chest holds a vase or lotus stem. The pierced flame mandorla behind denotes the fire of wisdom consuming afflictions. Such jade images were placed in shrines or on windowsill tables, venerated and admired by court and literati alike in the Qing.
