A QING HETIAN WHITE JADE CARVING, RETAILED WITH SKIN, OF A BOY OFFERING LONGEVITY, ON A HARDWOOD STAND 尺寸:W:10cm;H:7cm 和田白玉留皮。 A Hetian white jade carving, retailed with the natural skin, of a boy embracing a peach. The boy leans against the large fruit, round-faced and smiling; the orange-brown skin is utilised on the peach to render a netted pattern, with smaller peaches and leaves at the side. The jade is warm and white. It is fitted with a hardwood root stand. The longevity peach comes from the Queen Mother of the West's peach orchard: it flowers once every three thousand years and ripens after another three thousand, and eating it confers immortality. In the Han Wudi Neizhuan the Queen Mother presents five peaches to Emperor Wu, who tries to keep the stones to plant in China; she replies that the climate there is too warm for the tree to mature. Hence the giant peach became a birthday offering, and a boy holding one is the boy presenting longevity. The jade cutter has retained the russet skin of the pebble to render the peach's netted rind, a clever-colour technique characteristic of Qing jade work. The small topknot is the classic baby's hair seen on Qing boy carvings from the Yongzheng-Qianlong reigns.
