A WHITE JADE LIU HAI PLAYING WITH THE GOLDEN TOAD, QING DYNASTY This white jade carving shows the three-legged golden toad crouching, its warty back raised, while the boy Liu Hai holds a string of coins teasing the toad. The jade is warm white with faint patina. It stands on a carved zitan stand. It is a Qing white-jade hand piece. Liu Hai playing with the golden toad is a wealth theme. Liu Hai was a Five-Dynasty Daoist, enlightened by Han Zhongli of the Eight Immortals; he played with a three-legged toad that spat out coins for the poor. He is therefore a God of Wealth. The carving, common in jade, wishes for incoming wealth and a prosperous home.
