A WHITE JADE CARVING OF PEACHES AND BATS 尺寸:L:14cm;H:8cm 白玉圓雕壽桃。 A white jade carving of peaches. Several peaches of varying sizes cluster together, a large one behind and smaller ones in front, joined by naturalistic branches and leaves; two bats are incised on the peach surfaces. The stone is warm, clean white with a faint greenish tint, carved as a whole branch. The peach symbolises longevity. According to tradition, the Queen Mother of the West's peaches ripen once every three thousand years; when she visited Emperor Wu of Han on Mount Hua she presented him with four. Peaches, whether made of dough, jade or ceramic, are thus standard birthday offerings. The bat (fu) puns on blessing, so peaches with bats denote both fortune and long life. Qing carvers favoured openwork white-jade peach branches for the desk.
