A HAN JADE CONG WITH STRING BANDS 尺寸:H:11cm 玉質,白地夾褐黃沁斑。 A jade cong, of white tone suffused with brownish russet. It is cylindrical in section, pierced top to bottom, its exterior divided into sections by multiple bands of parallel string pattern, three lines per section, separated vertically by grooves. Plain apart from the string bands, the jade is smooth with natural russet inclusions. The form is archaic and restrained. The cong is one of the six ritual jades listed in the Rites of Zhou: a dark disc honours Heaven, a yellow cong honours Earth. Dating back to Neolithic Liangzhu culture, it was an earth-offering jade: its round interior and square exterior encode the cosmology of round heaven and square earth, while the central perforation allowed communication between the realms. By the Han, ancient cong were already treasured antiquities; they were displayed in studios or buried as grave goods. This plain example, divided only by string bands, follows the ancient ritual form, reflecting the Han regard for ancient rites and antiquities.
