A REPUBLICAN-PERIOD XIUYAN JADE CARVING OF A DRAGON-FISH 尺寸:L:20cm;H:15cm 岫玉雕。 A Xiuyan jade carving of a dragon-fish, head raised and tail curled, with a dragon's head and a fish body, scales finely defined, fins and teeth bared as if leaping through waves. The stone is of a pale green, translucent and brightly polished. A Republican-period ornament evoking the carp-transforming-into-dragon motif. The dragon-fish renders the carp-leaping-over-Dragon-Gate legend. According to the Sanqin Ji, at Hejin, also called Dragon Gate, Yu the Great cut through the mountain to let the Yellow River pass. Three thousand carps gathered; those that leaped through became dragons, those that failed returned with a bruised forehead. Hence entering the dragon gate came to mean passing the imperial examinations and rising in office. A dragon-headed, fish-bodied beast tossing through waves captures this transformation. Xiuyan jade, from Xiuyan in Liaoning, has been worked since early times and in modern times became widely used for ornaments on account of its warm tone. A carving like this in a studio wishes academic success and symbolises rising against the current.
