明 黃玉出廓龍紋璧

英文品名：A YELLOW JADE BI DISC WITH OPENWORK DRAGON LUGS 尺寸：L:15.5cm;W:13cm;H:0.5cm 黃玉質，帶紅褐及灰白色沁蝕。體作圓璧形，中有穿孔，兩側出廓，鏤雕對稱龍紋耳飾。璧面淺刻蟠螭卷雲紋，佈滿器身，線條遒勁，間以細陰刻毛雕。玉質溫潤，沁色古樸，邊緣略有斑駁。玉璧為禮玉之一，古以蒼璧禮天，後世亦作陳設佩系之用。出廓璧係於圓璧兩側鏤雕龍紋耳飾：先以管鑽在需要鏤空處鑽出小孔，再以金屬弦鋸穿過鑽孔，依畫樣拉鋸出龍形輪廓，最後以石英砂琢磨、拋光。璧面蟠螭紋以游絲毛雕陰刻而成，線細如髮，走絲游刃，最見玉工功力。璧為禮玉，古以蒼璧禮天，兩側出廓鏤龍更添威儀，歷代玉作多承此制。 A yellowish jade bi disc with aged russet and pale encrusted patina. It is circular with a central aperture, two openwork dragon lugs projecting from the sides. The surface is incised throughout with interlaced kui-dragon and cloud scrolls, the lines firm and precise, with fine hair-line detailing. The stone is warm and lustrous with an archaic patina. The bi was one of the ritual jades, used in antiquity for rites and later as an ornament. An openwork bi disc with projecting lugs was made by drilling holes along the dragon outlines with a hollow tube, then threading a fine metal saw through the holes to cut out the openwork; the edges were then abraded with quartz sand and polished. The interlaced kui-dragon ground was incised in hair-line wandering-thread lines, the clearest test of the carver's skill. The bi being a ritual jade offered to Heaven, the openwork dragon lugs add further dignity to the disc.
