A WHITE JADE OPENWORK BI DISC WITH SEAL-SCRIPT INSCRIPTION A white jade openwork bi disc with deep russet patina along one side. It is oval with a round central aperture, worked in openwork. Two kui dragons are carved symmetrically on either side, and an auspicious inscription in seal script is rendered at the top and bottom, interwoven with the dragon scrolls. The jade is lustrous white with natural russet skin. Such inscriptions are an auspicious formula found on bi discs from the Han onward, blessing posterity. An openwork bi was made by first outlining the interwoven dragons and seal-script inscription, drilling a ring of holes through the areas to be cut away, then threading a fine wire saw through the holes to cut the design; quartz-sand abrasion rounded the lines. The inscription may there be noble sons has appeared on bi discs since Han times, and Qing jade-workers also favoured this formula, interweaving the seal characters with dragon scrolls.
