A PAIR OF GREEN JADE SWORD-FORM PENDANTS, HAN DYNASTY 尺寸:L:24cm 青玉扁體雕,一對。 A pair of flat green jade sword-form pendants. Each is shaped like a long jade sword: the lower end broadens to a pointed blade, the upper end is pierced into openwork phoenix and dragon outlines, with a rectangular perforation in the middle. Incised interlocking scroll and diaper patterns cover the surface. The stone is greenish grey with chalky earth suffusions and a mellow aged patina. Jade sword fittings belonged to the jade-hilted sword worn by Han aristocrats: pommel, guard, scabbard slide and chape were all of jade. Burial pendants of stone or jade in sword form were also placed in tombs as emblems of warrior guardians. The openwork phoenix-dragon crests and incised interlocking scrolls on this pair are characteristic of Han pendants worn in strings of jade ornaments.
