A QING GREENISH-WHITE JADE RECUMBENT BEAST WITH RUSSET SKIN 尺寸:L:12cm;H:9cm 青白玉圓雕瑞獸。 A greenish-white jade recumbent beast. The creature turns its head, with curved horn, broad jaw open, forelegs planted and hind legs half-crouched, tail curling up. Incised cloud scrolls run over the neck, body and legs. The stone is greenish grey with russet-brown skin. The pixiu bixie has been a popular auspicious beast since the Han, its form changing with the dynasties: Han beasts stand boldly, Ming ones are plump and docile, Qing ones stress stern features and defined claws and fangs. Believed to devour riches and never release it, the creature was kept by merchants; it also eats demons, so it guarded homes and studies. Here the carver keeps the natural russet skin, letting its warm brown play against the greenish flesh — a refined use of the stone's natural skin.
