A QING GREENISH-WHITE JADE RECUMBENT BUFFALO WITH RUSSET SKIN 尺寸:L:14cm;H:6cm 青白玉圓雕。 A greenish-white jade recumbent buffalo carved in the round. The beast lies with head turned back, body plump, forelegs folded, hind legs tucked under, horns small and curved. The jade is greenish-white with russet skin at the hindquarters; fine incised lines show folds and tail hair. The polish is soft, suited to the hand. A Qing hand-piece. The recumbent buffalo (funiu) carries a pastoral meaning; Laozi is said to have ridden a green buffalo through the Hangu Pass, linking the animal to Daoist repose. Qing jade buffaloes were commonly hand-pieces, their warm stone meant for palm-rubbing. The calm, lowered pose conveys peaceful times and the rest due to toil.
