A WHITE JADE EWER WITH A CLOISONNÉ-ENAMELED GILT-BRONZE OVERHEAD HANDLE, THE BASE BEARING A QIANLONG SEAL MARK, QING DYNASTY A white jade ewer of rounded form with a domed cover and circular knop. Ruyi-shaped handles carved to each side hold loose rings, and the body rests on three cloud feet. The overhead bail is of gilt bronze covered in turquoise cloisonné enamel with flower scrolls, joined at dragon-head terminals. The greenish-white jade is left plain, its smooth surface the chief beauty. A four-character Qianlong seal mark in cinnabar red is stamped to the base. Jade, enamel and gilding are combined in a refined Qing court-style ewer. The overhead-handled ewer held tea or wine: the rounded body with fitted cover is carried by the arched bail and allows gentle warming. At the Qing court such jade ewers were used in tea gatherings and banquets, as well as displayed. This plain white jade vessel relies on the stone's lustre, while the cloisonné-enamelled gilt-bronze bail joined by dragon heads provides a court-style contrast; the Qianlong seal mark indicates an imperial-warehouse type.
