A SPINACH-GREEN JADE RUYI SCEPTER WITH MULTI-MATERIAL BIRD-AND-FLOWER INLAY 尺寸:L:42cm;W:11cm 碧玉製。 A ruyi scepter of spinach-green jade, with a long shaft and cloud-shaped head. Three white-jade ruyi-shaped panels are set at the head, middle and tail, each inlaid with multi-material bird-and-flower designs: small birds on flowering branches, green leaves, accented with red, blue and green hardstones. The shaft itself is inlaid with small flowers and butterflies, edged in gilt. The jade is smooth and the inlay vivid, a Qing jade ruyi. Precious-stone inlay, or baibaoqian, on a jade scepter involved cutting pieces of white jade, agate, jadeite, lapis, coral and turquoise to match a painted design of petals, leaves and feathers, fixing them with lacquer, and then chasing a gold wire along the edges to lock each piece; when set, the whole was ground flush and polished. The ruyi began as a back-scratcher and evolved into an auspicious presentation scepter, often bestowed by Qing emperors on meritorious officials.
