A WHITE JADE INKSTONE CARVED WITH A QILIN, QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD Carved from a single piece of pale white Hetian jade with a warm, lustrous sheen, this inkstone features a raised border enclosing a finely carved qilin crouching among swirling clouds, its expression vivid and its mane detailed. The sides are decorated with incised cloud and chrysanthemum borders, while the reverse remains plain and smoothly polished. It is a fine example of Qing-period imperial jade stationery. The qilin was an imagined auspicious beast: male qi, female lin, with a stag's body, ox tail and single horn, said to tread on no living thing and break no growing grass—a creature of warlike aspect but peaceful intent. Confucius is said to have stopped writing the Springs and Autumns after a lin was captured, and the beast became an omen of sage rule and golden age, as well as a metaphor for gifted children. Jade, inkstone and brick carvings regularly show it amid clouds as a wish for good fortune.
