A WHITE JADE ROUND TABLE SCREEN CARVED WITH A SCHOLAR ASKING A BOY UNDER PINES, QING DYNASTY The round white-jade panel of this table screen is carved in low relief with a scholar asking a boy under pines: an ancient gnarled pine, a leaning staff-bearing scholar, and a boy pointing to distant mountains, the mood spare and distant. The jade is warm and lustrous white. It stands on a carved zitan stand with vase-shaped ears and ruyi feet. It is a Qing white-jade desk screen. 'Asking the boy under the pine' comes from Jia Dao's poem Seeking the Master but Not Meeting: 'Under the pine I asked the boy; he said the master had gone for herbs. He is only on this mountain; the clouds are deep and I know not where.' The subject became common in painting and carving, evoking the search for the recluse. A round jade panel on a zitan stand on the desk joined inkstone and brush pot as a refined plaything.
