A CARVED GREEN JADE CIRCULAR BOX AND COVER, HAN DYNASTY 尺寸：D:10cm;H:4cm 青玉圓蓋盒。 A green jade circular box and cover. The body is flat and round; the lid is carved in low relief with two scrolled chi-dragons among cloud scrolls, centred on a sun-like spiral. The box has a fitted lip and plain sides. The stone is of a deep greenish grey with black inky suffusions. The carving is archaic, a Han-style jade box. Jade covered boxes date from the Han and held incense, ink-paste, seals or jewels as part of a dressing set. Han boxes are usually circular, the lids carved with auspicious beasts, cloud scrolls or grain patterns; later, jade, enamel and lacquer boxes served as ink-paste or incense containers in the studio. The two-chi and cloud design here is a typical Han motif, and the fitted, compact body descends from Han jade toilet boxes.
