A QING GOLDSTONE CARVING OF A STANDING LADY HOLDING A FLOWER 尺寸:H:18cm 金星石雕。 A goldstone carving of a standing lady. She is shown turned slightly, her long sleeves fluttering in the breeze. The right hand holds a flower and the left falls to her side; the robe folds are swept and lively. The stone is of a golden brown hue, densely flecked with sparkling gold particles, polished to a bright lustre. Goldstone is not a natural gem but an artificial sunglass: silica glass is melted with copper filings and cooled slowly, so that metallic copper crystals form within the matrix and sparkle when turned. The material is said to have come from seventeenth-century Venice, reaching China through Canton and Macau under the Qing maritime trade, where it was called starstone glass. Carvers exploited its glitter to suggest wind-swept drapery. Being brittle glass, openwork angles tend to chip, so robes are modelled in broad curves rather than sharp undercuts.
