A QING LAPIS LAZULI CARVING OF A DOUBLE GOURD WITH BATS, ON A HARDWOOD STAND 尺寸:L:11cm 青金石雕。 A lapis lazuli carving of a double gourd, with climbing branches, lingzhi and bats rendered in relief over the surface, a bat resting on the gourd and vines entwining the body. The stone is of a rich pure blue, flecked with pyrite and white calcite. It is fitted with a hardwood stand. The gourd puns on fortune and emolument, symbolising blessings passed through generations. The double gourd puns on fu and lu; its trailing vines bear fruit abundantly, giving the wish of blessings passed through ten thousand generations. The bat puns on fortune, so a bat perched on a gourd means the arrival of luck; lingzhi denotes longevity. This triple rebus is a hallmark of Qing auspicious art across jade, cloisonné and textiles, used in court ceremonies and private weddings and birthdays. Lapis lazuli, known in early China as qiulin, reached the Han through the Western Regions and was treasured in the Qing court for its sky-like blue, often set into official hat finials.
