A REPUBLICAN-PERIOD LAPIS LAZULI CARVING OF TWO IMMORTALS, ON A WOOD STAND 尺寸:W:11cm;H:14cm 青金石雕。 A lapis lazuli carving of two immortals, one taller and one youthful, both in long robes. One holds a ritual object and the other a round fan; the figures stand close together with ribbons flying. The stone is of a deep blue, with white calcite and pyrite inclusions. It is fitted with a wood stand. Lapis lazuli is valued for a deep, pure blue, with pyrite flecks and white calcite veins. Cutters must work around the white calcite seams, as these split at fine details. Because colour is uneven, carvers plan the surface: deep blue becomes robes, white veins are turned into cloud or rock. Qing court lapis came largely from Badakhshan in Afghanistan, reaching China via the Karakoram routes and rivalling gold in value. Immortal figures are rough-shaped first, features defined with small grinding wheels, then polished on leather to bring up the deep colour.
