A QING SHOUSHAN STONE CARVING OF THE TWO IMMORTALS OF HARMONY, ON A HARDWOOD STAND 尺寸:L:20cm;H:13cm 壽山石。 A Shoushan stone carving of the Two Immortals of Harmony, shown crouching face to face, one holding a lotus leaf and the other a round box, smiling at each other. Hair and robes follow the natural form of the stone, which is of a mottled yellow-brown tone. It is fitted with a hardwood stand. The pair symbolise harmony and reunion. The Two Immortals of Harmony derive from Hanshan and Shide, Tang-dynasty monks of Mount Tiantai said to be incarnations of Manjushri and Samantabhadra. They lived as close friends at Guoqing Temple, and the folk came to venerate them as gods of harmony. In 1733 the Yongzheng Emperor formally canonised Hanshan as Saint He and Shide as Saint He, in charge of marital and domestic concord. They are shown as two youths, one holding a lotus, harmony, and the other a round box, union, bats sometimes issuing from the lid. Their images decorated weddings and halls. Shoushan stone, from Houguan in Fujian, has been carved since the Qing for seals and ornaments, ranked with Qingtian and Chicken-blood stones.
