英文品名：A REPUBLICAN-PERIOD AGATE VASE WITH CLEVERLY-CARVED CHRYSANTHEMUMS, ON A HARDWOOD STAND 尺寸：H:14cm 瑪瑙俏色雕。花瓶連枝葉，花葉利用瑪瑙天然紅褐皮色，巧雕成菊花數朵，花瓣層疊，晶瑩可愛；瓶身白瑪瑙，刻魚子錦地。枝葉鏤空，舒展自然。下配硬木座。為民國時期巧色瑪瑙擺件。瑪瑙為玉髓類石英礦，天生色帶紋理。俏色，又稱巧色，玉人不遮去天然皮色、色帶，反而依其分佈設計題材：紅褐皮處巧雕菊花花瓣，白瑪瑙處留作瓶身，謂依色取俏。工序先看料開畫，就色擬稿，再以砣具輪磨，因瑪瑙硬度七，全賴金剛砂琢磨；鏤空枝葉須管鑽掏空。民國時期北京、廣州、蘇州玉作多作此類小件，銷向文人與海外市場。 An agate vase with clever colour carving. The vase is of pale translucent agate with a stippled ground; natural reddish-brown skin is utilised to carve chrysanthemums in relief, petals layered. The pierced leaves spread naturally. It is fitted with a hardwood stand. Agate is a chalcedony with natural banded colours. Clever colour means the cutter does not hide the skin or bands but designs the motif around them: here the reddish-brown skin is used for chrysanthemum petals, the pale agate left as the vase body. The process begins by studying the stone, sketching on it, then wheel-grinding with diamond abrasive, since agate is Mohs seven; pierced leaves are hollowed with tubular drills. Republican-period Beijing, Canton and Suzhou workshops made such small pieces for literati and export markets.
