A QING GILT-BRONZE AND PAINTED ENAMEL SNUFF BOTTLE WITH BIRD-AND-FLOWER MEDALLIONS A small gilt-bronze snuff bottle of flattened form with a chased gilt cover. The neck and foot are banded in coral-red brocade enamel, while the blue ground of the body is enriched with gilt scrolls and reserved with two round medallions painted in enamel: one shows a long-tailed bird among peonies, the other a songbird on a flowering branch. The gilt borders stand proud and the colours are bright. Snuff bottles held powdered tobacco, introduced into China in the late Ming and widely used at court and among scholars in the Qing. The small flattened body has a tight cover fitted with a tiny spoon; a pinch of snuff is lifted to the nostril and inhaled. Pocket-sized, they were carried in the sleeve and became objects of virtu in many materials, porcelain, painted enamel, glass and jade. This gilt-enamel example with bird-and-flower medallions was such a personal pocket plaything.
