A QING AMETHYST CARVING OF A LADY AND PHOENIX 尺寸:H:15cm 紫晶雕。 An amethyst carving of a lady and phoenix. The lady stands in a high bun and long skirt, her right hand lifting a small basket and her left raising a flower spray. Beside her a phoenix is pierced, head raised and wings spread, its tail sweeping down. Foliage and scrolling vines fill the background in openwork. The stone is of translucent, varying purple tones, polished to a warm glow. The pairing of a lady and a phoenix in Qing carving often alludes to the story of Xiao Shi and Nong Yu. According to the Liexian Zhuan, Xiao Shi of the Spring and Autumn period played the flute so skilfully that he could summon peacocks and swans. Nong Yu, daughter of Duke Mu of Qin, loved his playing and married him. After years she too could imitate the phoenix call; phoenixes came to roost on their roof, and the couple rode away on them. Hence leading the phoenix became an allusion to a happy marriage. Amethyst's purple tone adds dignity, while the phoenix is king of birds; the figure's basket and spray may also nod to the fairy Magu's offering. Such pieces graced studios and women's chambers, blessing marriage and purity alike.
