A REPUBLICAN-PERIOD ROSE QUARTZ CARVING OF A LION WITH A BROCADE BALL, ON A HARDWOOD STAND 尺寸:L:13cm;H:15cm 粉晶雕。 A rose quartz carving of a lion. The beast crouches, one front paw resting on a brocade ball, head turned, curls of mane defined, mouth open. The stone is of a pale pink tone, translucent and warm, with natural veining visible. It is fitted with a pierced hardwood stand. A Republican-period auspicious beast ornament. The lion with a brocade ball is the subject of the folk saying: the lion rolls the ball, good things are sought from the head. Lions entered China as tribute from the Western Regions in Han times and gradually became guardian beasts at palace and mansion gates; in Buddhism the lion is the Buddha's mount, and the lion's roar denotes fearless preaching. Folk lion dances are likewise led by a ball to drive out evil and welcome auspice. In a pair, the male paws a ball, overlooking the cosmos, and the female nurses a cub, the lineage. Rose quartz's soft pink made such small carvings suitable for a lady's chamber or a wedding gift, adding gentle auspice to the motif.
