A QING WOOD CARVING OF A LANDSCAPE MOUNTAIN (SHANZI) 尺寸:H:20cm 木雕。 A wood mountain carving worked in the round from a natural block. Jagged peaks rise, with a gnarled pine carved in openwork on the crag, its scales and branches detailed; a winding ravine and a small pavilion nestle among the heights. The wood is dark with a mellow patina. It was made as a scholar's desk ornament evoking the spirit of Song-Yuan landscape painting. A shanzi, or inkstone mountain, is a miniature landscape carved for the scholar's desk, compressing famous peaks into arm's reach. Since the Song, literati have placed Taihu or Lingbi rocks on their tables, seeking woods and springs without leaving the studio. Qing mountain carvings were usually in zitan, boxwood or hongmu, worked from the natural block, with pines, ravines and pavilions evoking Song-Yuan painting. They were admired over tea and calligraphy, rubbed by the fingers until the patina glowed, grouped with inkstones, brush-rests and water-droppers as pure offerings of the studio, enabling the scholar to lie in travel from his chair.
