A MING WOOD FIGURE OF GUANYIN IN ROYAL EASE A wood figure of Guanyin seated in royal ease, one knee raised and one foot lowered, the hands clasped about the knee and the face cast down in quiet meditation. The deity wears a hooded crown over a piled coiffure and a full, serene face. The robes fall in natural folds, traces of mineral pigments in green and cinnabar remaining on the surface. The wood shows age cracks and a patina, carved with rounded assurance. The Water-moon Guanyin, or Guanyin in royal ease, is one of the thirty-three manifestations of the Bodhisattva, famously depicted from the Tang painter Zhou Fang as leaning by water in an unconstrained pose. The iconography shows one knee raised, the hands clasped around it, the eyes cast down in compassion. From the Song and Yuan onward, wood, stone and porcelain images of this form were widely placed in family chapels and scholars' studios as devotional images for blessing.
