清 竹根雕單角瑞獸香薰連座

英文品名：A BAMBOO-ROOT CARVED SINGLE-HORNED AUSPICIOUS-BEAST INCENSE BURNER, WITH BROCADE STAND, QING DYNASTY 尺寸：H:13cm 此香薰以竹根圓雕而成，作單角瑞獸（甪端一類）蹲坐之姿：昂首闊口，單角聳立於額頂，二目圓睜，前肢挺拔，後足蟠踞。身滿刻捲雲紋，刀法圓渾古樸。器身中空，腹底開有出煙口，斷為香薰。腹側陰刻行書「乙亥年夏刻」，下綴一方小印（印文漫漶未能辨識）。木色紅潤，包漿瑩亮。下配織錦繡花圓座，座面橙紅素錦，側面以藍、綠、黃、紅彩織折枝花紋。甪端，傳說中神獸，日行萬里，通四方語言，為明君掌辨四方、守護香案之瑞。明清宮廷多以銅、瓷、竹木雕甪端香薰，置於御座文幾兩旁，焚香以進，取「正人在側、辟邪迎祥」之意。竹根隨形雕刻，溫潤沁手，經年摩挲，皮色愈深，最宜文房陳設把玩。 This incense burner is carved from bamboo root as a single-horned auspicious beast (a luduan-type) seated upright: head raised and jaws open, a single horn rising from the crown, round eyes, forelegs erect, hindquarters curled. The body is carved all over with ruyi clouds, the carving rounded and archaic. The hollow body opens beneath for the passage of smoke, confirming it as a censer. The belly is incised in running script with 'Carved in the summer of Yihai year' and a small square seal below (the seal characters are worn and cannot be read). The wood is reddish with a lustrous patina. It rests on a brocade-wrapped round stand with an orange silk top and sides woven in blue, green, yellow and red floral sprays. The luduan is a mythical beast said to travel ten thousand li a day and understand all tongues; it guarded the ruler's incense table. Ming-Qing courts placed bronze, porcelain, bamboo and root luduan censers by the imperial desk, incense rising to ward off evil and welcome auspiciousness. Bamboo root, warm to the touch and deepening with handling, suited scholar's-studio display.
