A SET OF THREE BAMBOO-ROOT CARVINGS OF THE GODS OF FORTUNE, EMOLUMENT AND LONGEVITY, QING DYNASTY This set of three bamboo-root carvings shows: the star of Fortune in robes holding an infant; the star of Emolument in official dress holding a ruyi; and the star of Longevity with bald domed brow, leaning on a staff and holding a peach. The three stand together, benevolent and smiling, robes flowing. The bamboo is reddish and lustrous, the natural root form used to advantage. They are a Qing set of the Three Stars. Fu, Lu and Shou grew from star worship: Fortune, Emolument and Longevity. From Ming-Qing they were personified as the best-loved trio of auspicious gods, displayed at New Year and birthdays to wish for a full measure of blessing, rank and long life. Bamboo root, carved following its natural form, suits standing figures.
