Boys gather about him, holding scrolls, peaches or at play, their poses lively. The root form is used naturally, the bamboo reddish and lustrous. It is a Qing bamboo-root display piece. The God of Longevity is the Old Man of the South Pole. From the Ming he was shown bald and long-browed, short and broad, holding a peach and staff, symbolizing long life. Surrounding boys wish for many sons and success in the exams; such groups were common at New Year and birthdays. The natural knotted root suits multi-figure groups.
