A BAMBOO-ROOT GOURD-SHAPED BOX AND COVER, SIGNED "DASHENG" 尺寸:L:15cm;H:6cm 竹根雕葫蘆形蓋盒。 A bamboo-root gourd-shaped box and cover. It takes the form of a double-bodied gourd, lid and body as one. The surface is carved in low relief with gourd vines, leaves and small fruits trailing between them, suggesting offspring along the vine; the wall bears the incised signature "Dasheng" followed by a square seal. The bamboo skin is of a lustrous date-red, veins finely incised. The gourd (hulu) puns on fortune and emolument; because its vine trails and bears many fruits, it also symbolises many descendants. The immortals, including Li Tieguai, carry gourds containing elixir; the gourd is one of the Eight Immortals' hidden emblems. Qing studios used bamboo-root or boxwood gourd boxes to hold medicine, ink-paste or sewing items. Here small gourds trail from the large one, the traditional wish for lasting progeny.
